The Oberortlhof farm of the famous mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, in Juval, South Tyrol/Italy, has launched a project that unites the cultural narratives of Tibet and South Tyrol within its rustic walls. The project was inspired by Tibetan prayer flags, which symbolise unity and hope.

The design incorporates both physical and metaphorical threads to represent the interconnectedness of the cultures. Three of the five flats have been renovated and each reflects one of the five colours of the prayer flags. They combine traditional elements of South Tyrolean and Tibetan culture and represent a harmonious fusion.

Reinhold Messner's personal collection of Tibetan artefacts provides a tangible link to the past and cultural exchange. The collaboration on this project has preserved the charm of the farmhouse while integrating modern comforts. This project is a testament to the beauty of cultural interplay and unity that unites two worlds and hearts under one roof.

Bringing an old farmhouse back to life and the hearts and minds that have worked on it reflect the beauty that is created when cultures mix and dreams build on each other. Just like the Tibetan prayer flags, the concept aims to overcome boundaries and harmoniously unite the essence of two different cultures, South Tyrol and Tibet, within the rustic walls of the old farmhouse.

CONCEPT

OBERORTLHOF

A new chapter has begun at the picturesque Oberortlhof farm community in Juval, South Tyrol, Italy. This enchanting place, nestled in the steep hilly landscape, consists of a handful of typical huts, barns and sheds set among gardens, rocks and pastures with grazing animals.

CULTURAL INTEGRATION

With a strong connection to Tibet, this project, the renovation of three holiday homes, weaves together unique cultural narratives of Tibet and South Tyrol under one roof.

TIBETAN PRAYER FLAGS

The project is inspired by Tibetan prayer flags, which are described as ‘blessings on the breath of nature’. The flags are traditionally made so that the wind slowly carries the threads around the world, and are believed to spread goodwill.
